The National Commission for Women (NCW) has celebrated Yogamaya Memorial Day on July 7, 2008 by paying heartfelt tributes to Vidushi Yogamaya, the pioneer of the social reform campaign for her invaluable contribution in the field of Women's Awakening. The event was hosted by Hon'ble Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, Shri Lilanath Shrestha and chaired by Hon'ble Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Kamal Kumari Parajuli. The Chief Guest of the program, Hon'ble Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, Shri Lilanath Shrestha, said that Yogamaya's courageous contribution for women's awakening and social reform was inspiring to all of us even in the harsh era of Rana rule where citizens were banned from writing, speaking and opening organizations. Stating that the protection of women's dignity and rights is the primary responsibility of the state, he pointed out the need for the support of civil society organizations in this endeavor. He said that it was necessary to move ahead by empowering women politically, economically and socially by raising the awareness of women to prevent incidents of gender based violence in the country.
Hon'ble Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Shri Kamal Kumari Parajuli, on behalf of the Commission, expressed happiness over the commemoration of Yogamaya Day for the first time in the history of the Commission and said that Yogamaya's strong journey of social change and women's rights He said that it is equally relevant. He said that Yogamaya, who shouted for women's equality, freedom and awakening in the dark age of Rana rule a century ago, was a truly courageous and change-loving woman. He said that Yogamaya was a respected and inspiring person for all Nepali women who openly protested against the existing inhuman practices against women such as sati, child marriage, polygamy, incest, domestic violence and abuse. He pointed out that all of us should highly appreciate the sacrifices and austerities made by Yogamaya to end the social discrimination between sons and daughters and maintain gender equality. He also expressed the view that the release of the study report prepared by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on the implementation of the findings of the Sixth Periodic Report on Nepal on the occasion of Yogamaya Memorial Day was very timely.

Expressing happiness over the commission's tradition of celebrating Yogamaya Memorial Day, Mr. Vandana Rana, Member of the UNSID Committee and former Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, expressed her gratitude for Yogamaya's contribution to women's rights.
