The National Commission for Women (NCW) today organized an interaction program with journalists affiliated with various media outlets on the ongoing work of the Commission on Control and Prevention of Gender Based Violence in the country and the steps to be taken in the coming days. The interaction program organized under the chairmanship of Hon'ble Chairperson of the Commission Kamal Kumari Parajuli was attended by Hon'ble Members of the Commission Mr. Krishna Kumari Poudel Khatiwada, Mr. Vidyakumari Sinha, Mr. Jaya Ghimire and Mr. Savitra Kumari Sharma among others.
On the occasion, Chairperson of the Commission Hon'ble Kamal Kumari Parajuli expressed serious concern over the increasing incidence of violence against women in the country and said that it was necessary to coordinate and cooperate with all parties concerned to control violence and mistreatment against women. He said that the commission was working continuously without any prejudice to bring justice to all the women and children victims of violence and bring the perpetrators to justice. He also said that the commission was coordinating to provide justice, security and necessary assistance to the victims of violence and affected women across the country through the 1145 Helpline. He said that the commission was conducting various awareness, promotional and therapeutic programs to end all forms of violence against women in the name of religion, culture and tradition, as well as social evils including the practice of witchcraft and accusations of witchcraft.
Speaking on the occasion, Hon'ble Member of the Commission Hon'ble Krishna Kumari Poudel Khatiwada said that the Commission would take the incidents of violence against women seriously. Did Similarly, Hon'ble Member Vidya Kumari Sinha briefed the local administration about the initiatives taken by the Commission to investigate the incidents of violence against women in Mahottari, Sarlahi and other districts and investigate the facts of the incident and take legal action against the culprits. He pointed out that special efforts should be made to control the increase in the incidence of gender based violence in any district of the country and in province number two.
During the interaction program, journalists affiliated with various media outlets stressed on the need for the Commission to take all incidents of violence against women seriously and to strengthen coordination and cooperation among all agencies to control violence against women. He stressed on the need for awareness programs for men to control the incidence of violence against women and vocational training and training to help women become financially self-reliant according to their ability. He also said that increasing the capacity of the Judicial Committee at the local level would help in addressing the incidents of violence against women immediately.
Secretary of the Commission Manoj Kumar Acharya made a presentation on the activities being carried out by the Commission in the field of control of gender based violence. During her presentation, she said that out of 348 cases of violence against women registered through the Commission's helpline in the last three months, the number of cases of mental violence was the highest. The program was conducted by Mr. Anju Dhungana, Deputy Secretary, Women's Development Coordination Branch of the Commission.
